It's Not Just About You

Maybe John Karr didn't kill JonBenet Ramsey. But people, such as Colorado Gov. Bill Owens, who complain about how much the events of the past two weeks have cost taxpayers should look at the bigger picture: The money involved seems like a small price to pay to get this guy away from the many Thai children he almost certainly would have victimized. The citizens of Colorado should take some comfort in that.

This was a no-win for the DA. Had she not pursued Karr, his next stop would have been the press and the DA would have been chastised for not going after a guy, with a history of sexualy exploiting children, who was claiming - in detail - to be the killer.
To say the least, Karr's not a well man and, as the DA noted in her comments, he believes he did it. Based on his conduct, he wanted the attention for his imagined crime. Having corresponded for so long with so many who were so closely involved in the case and its investigation, he simply had to be ruled out.
The DA acted responsibly and in the only way she really could in order to rule him out as a suspect (since he was unwilling to give a DNA sample in Thailand). And, as the post points out, did some good for others in the process.
The media? The bizarre California attorneys? And now the Governor? Ummm - not so good.
